Reading from the Gospel, Friday, February 5 (click here)

   Friday, February 5
Daily Gospel (Mk 6: 14-29): At that time, she was spread abroad the name of Jesus and it came to news of King Herod. Some said, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers work in him." Others said, "He is Elijah"; other: "It is a prophet like the other prophets." Upon hearing Herod said, "He is John, whom I beheaded; he has risen." It is that Herod himself had sent and arrested John, bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. For John said to Herod, "You are not allowed to have your brother's wife." Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe; When he heard him, he was much perplexed, and heard him gladly.

And a convenient day came, when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, the tribunes and the leading men of Galilee. And when the daughter of the same Herodias danced, and pleased Herod and the guests. The king then said to the girl: "Ask me anything you want and I will give it." And he swore, "I'll give you what you ask, even half my kingdom." She went out and asked her mother, "What am I going to ask?". And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." He at once rushed to the king, asked: "I want you to give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was deeply distressed, but would not reject her because of his oaths and the guests. And immediately the king sent one of his guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard, they came and took his body and buried him.
