Liturgical day: Saturday August 29. The Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist
Gospel (Mk 6, 17-29): At that time Herod had sent and arrested John, bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. For John said to Herod, "You are not allowed to have your brother's wife." Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe; and hearing him were very perplexed, and heard him gladly.

And a convenient day came, when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers, the tribunes, and chief men of Galilee. And when the daughter of the same Herodias danced, and pleased Herod and his guests. The king then said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want and I will give it." And he vowed: "I will give you what you ask, even half my kingdom." She went out and asked her mother, "What am I going to ask?". And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." I at once rushed to the king, he asked was: "I want you to give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist" .The king was deeply distressed, but would not reject her because of his oaths and diners. And immediately the king sent one of his guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard, they came and took his body and buried him.
