Gospel of the day (Mt 1, 16.18-21.24a): Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, called Christ. The generation of Jesus Christ was thus: His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came to live together, it was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put in evidence, resolved to divorce her quietly.

This was planned, when the Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, fear not to take Mary your wife, because what is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. " When Joseph woke from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.
