Reading from the Gospel, Monday, August 3 (click here)

Liturgical day: Monday, August 3
Gospel (Mt 14, 13-21): At that time, when Jesus received the news of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew from there in a boat privately to a solitary place. As soon as people knew, they followed him on foot from the cities. On landing, I saw many people, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

In the evening the disciples came to him saying, "The place is deserted, and the hour is now past. Goodbye, then, to people, so they go into the villages and buy food for themselves. " But Jesus said, "No need to go away; Give them something to eat. " They said, 'We have here but five loaves and two fish. " He said, "Bring them here."

And he ordered the people to sit down on the grass; Then he took the five loaves and two fishes, and looking up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and they took up of the fragments left over, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
