Liturgical Day: Wednesday April 8
Gospel (Lk 24, 13-35): That same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about everything that had happened. It happened while they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself drew near and went with them; but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He said, "What are you discussing as you walk?". They stood with sorrowful air. One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things these days have gone into it?". He said, "What things?". They said: "What Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; how our chief priests and magistrates sentenced to death and crucified him. We had hoped that He who would deliver Israel; but, with all these things, now the third day since this happened. The fact is that some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb early, and did not find his body, they came saying they had seen a vision of angels, who said he lived. Were also some of us to the tomb and found it just as the women had said: but him they saw not. " He said, "O fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Ought not Christ to have suffered these things and enter into his glory?. " And it beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained what he had on him in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going, he made as if to go forward. But they forced him saying, "Stay with us, for evening and the day is far spent." And he went in to stay with them. It happened when I was at the table with them, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. They said to each other: "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures?". And they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them, saying, "It's true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon! ". They, in turn, told what had happened on the road and how he was known in the breaking of bread.
