Liturgical Day: Tuesday January 6
Gospel (Mt 2, 1-12): Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is the King of the Jews is born? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. "On hearing it, King Herod started and all Jerusalem with him. He summoned all the chief priests and scribes of the people, and he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Juda, art not the least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. '"
Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, me word, that I also worship him. "
When they had heard the king, they set out, and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the child was. Seeing the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. They entered the house; they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him; Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country another way.
