Liturgical Day: Sunday, September 21
Gospel (Mt 20, 1-16): At that time, Jesus told his disciples this parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After adjusting them for a penny per day, he sent them into the vineyard. He went out again mid-morning, he saw others standing in the place of work, and said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you due'. They were.
"He went out again about noon and afternoon, and did the same. He left in the evening and found others standing around, and said, 'How come you're here all day doing nothing?'. They said, 'No one has hired us.' He told them, 'You also go into the vineyard.'
"When it got dark, the owner said the foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last and ending with the first.' Came the sunset and each received a denarius. When the first came, they thought they would receive more, and they likewise received every man a penny. Then they began to protest against the master, 'These last worked only one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and embarrassment'. He replied to one of them, 'Friend, I do thee no wrong. Do not we adjust for a penny? Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last just like you. Do they not have the freedom to do what I want in my business? Or will you you envious because I am generous? '. So the last shall be first and the first last. "
